Annual Flower Care
Simple care for seasonal color in beds and containers.
Match the plant to the light.
Most flowering annuals prefer plenty of sun, though some perform better with afternoon shade in our warmer Southern California conditions.
Water the root zone, not just the surface.
Water consistently while plants establish. Containers may need more frequent attention than in-ground beds.
Start with the right root environment.
Use fertile, well-draining garden soil in beds. Use fresh potting mix in containers rather than garden soil.
In the ground or in a container?
In-ground
Prepare the planting bed, space plants to allow airflow, and plant at the same depth they were growing in the nursery container.
Containers
Use pots with drainage holes and enough room for roots. Mixed containers can combine annuals with similar sun and watering needs.
Feed for the plant, not by habit.
Regular light feeding can help annuals continue blooming through their active season.
Keep healthy growth in balance.
Remove spent flowers and trim leggy growth to encourage fresh blooms and a fuller shape.
Read the symptoms as clues, not a diagnosis.
Few flowers
Check sunlight and feeding.
Wilting
Soil may be drying too quickly.
Yellow leaves
Check for overwatering or poor drainage.
Pests
Inspect tender new growth and flower buds before treating.
