Cactus Care
Strong light and fast drainage are the foundation of healthy cactus care.
Match the plant to the light.
Most cacti prefer bright light and plenty of sun. Introduce stronger sun gradually to prevent sunburn.
Water the root zone, not just the surface.
Water deeply, then allow the soil to dry thoroughly before watering again.
Start with the right root environment.
Use a fast-draining cactus & succulent mix in containers. In-ground plantings need soil that drains quickly and does not remain wet.
In the ground or in a container?
In-ground
Plant in a sunny, very well-drained location and avoid burying the base of the cactus too deeply.
Containers
Use a sturdy pot with a drainage hole and enough weight to support the plant as it grows. Repot carefully when root-bound.
Feed for the plant, not by habit.
Feed lightly during active growth and avoid heavy fertilizing.
Keep healthy growth in balance.
Remove damaged growth carefully and use appropriate protection when handling spines.
Read the symptoms as clues, not a diagnosis.
Soft or dark areas
Possible rot from excess moisture.
Shriveling
May need water if the soil has been dry for an extended period.
Stretching
Usually not enough light.
Pale or scarred patches
Possible sun or physical damage.
