Indoor Plant Care
Match the plant to your light, watering habits and container conditions.
Match the plant to the light.
Match the plant to the light you actually have: bright indirect light, lower light, or some direct sun depending on the species.
Water the root zone, not just the surface.
Check the soil before watering. Most houseplants dislike staying constantly wet.
Start with the right root environment.
Use a quality indoor/potting mix suited to the plant. Do not use heavy in-ground garden soil in indoor containers.
In the ground or in a container?
In-ground
Most plants sold for indoor use are best kept in containers in our area. Only plant outdoors in-ground if the species is suited to the local climate and exposure.
Containers
Use a pot with drainage and avoid moving a plant into an oversized container. Repot when roots become crowded or the mix has broken down.
Feed for the plant, not by habit.
Feed lightly during active growth and reduce feeding when growth slows.
Keep healthy growth in balance.
Remove yellow leaves, wipe dusty foliage, and trim leggy stems when needed.
Read the symptoms as clues, not a diagnosis.
Yellow leaves
Often related to watering or drainage.
Brown tips
Can result from dry soil, low humidity, or salt buildup.
Drooping
Check both soil moisture and light.
Pests
Watch for scale, mealybugs, and spider mites.
