Maple Care
Protection from intense heat and steady root-zone moisture are especially important for many maples here.
Match the plant to the light.
In our Southern California climate, many maples appreciate protection from intense afternoon sun.
Water the root zone, not just the surface.
Keep roots evenly moist, especially during hot or windy weather, without keeping the soil constantly waterlogged.
Start with the right root environment.
Use well-draining in-ground soil with organic matter as appropriate. For containers, use a quality potting mix that holds some moisture while still draining well.
In the ground or in a container?
In-ground
Choose a protected site with enough room for mature growth. Plant with the root flare at or slightly above the surrounding soil level.
Containers
Smaller-growing maples can perform well in large containers. Choose a stable pot with excellent drainage and protect the root zone from extreme heat.
Feed for the plant, not by habit.
Feed lightly if needed. Excess fertilizer can encourage soft, weak growth.
Keep healthy growth in balance.
Prune lightly for structure and remove dead or damaged branches. Avoid unnecessary heavy pruning.
Read the symptoms as clues, not a diagnosis.
Crispy leaf edges
Heat, wind, or dry soil.
Scorched foliage
Too much intense afternoon sun.
Wilting
Check root-zone moisture.
Weak growth
Review light, drainage, and root conditions.
