Shade Shrub Care
Shade is not one condition—match the shrub to the actual light in the space.
Match the plant to the light.
Shade can mean filtered light, morning sun, or very little direct sun. Match the plant to the actual exposure.
Water the root zone, not just the surface.
Water deeply while plants establish and adjust frequency as roots mature.
Start with the right root environment.
Most shade shrubs appreciate well-draining garden soil with organic matter. Use quality potting mix for containers.
In the ground or in a container?
In-ground
Plant at the same depth as the root ball and allow enough room for the shrub’s mature width. Consider competition from nearby tree roots.
Containers
Choose a container large enough for the shrub’s mature root system and provide drainage. Container plants need closer attention to watering in warm weather.
Feed for the plant, not by habit.
Feed according to the plant’s needs rather than on a fixed schedule.
Keep healthy growth in balance.
Prune to remove damaged growth and maintain the plant’s natural shape.
Read the symptoms as clues, not a diagnosis.
Sparse growth
The area may be too dark.
Scorched leaves
Too much hot afternoon sun.
Yellowing
Check drainage and watering.
Poor flowering
Light may be insufficient for that variety.
