Succulent Care
The right balance of light, drainage and water makes all the difference.
Match the plant to the light.
Bright light to full sun — acclimate gradually to stronger sun.
Water the root zone, not just the surface.
Let the soil dry well between waterings. Deep soak, then wait.
Start with the right root environment.
Use a fast-draining cactus & succulent mix in containers. In the garden, avoid heavy soil that stays wet for long periods.
In the ground or in a container?
In-ground
Choose a spot with excellent drainage and plant at the same depth as the root ball. Mounding slightly can help in heavy soils.
Containers
Always use a pot with a drainage hole. Terra cotta and other breathable containers can help the mix dry more quickly.
Feed for the plant, not by habit.
Feed lightly during active growth. Succulents do not need much.
Keep healthy growth in balance.
Remove dead leaves and trim leggy growth as needed.
Read the symptoms as clues, not a diagnosis.
Mushy leaves
Too much water or poor drainage.
Wrinkled leaves
The plant may need water.
Mealybugs or aphids
Identify the pest first, then choose the appropriate treatment.
Bleached patches
Possible sun stress after sudden exposure.
